What makes ADS-B better than the current radar system?

Current radar systems in use, update at slower rates than ADS-B systems. A long range radar takes up to 12 seconds to rotate and update, while ADS-B controllers can be updated approximately once every second. By providing a far more accurate surveillance system, ATC no longer needs to maintain such wide separations between aircraft. Along with more efficient routing and resource management, pilots with ADS-B “in” will also gain potential access to free onboard traffic and weather.
